David Weprin’s Monday blues
3:02 pm • 29 August 2011

The Democratic candidate to replace Anthony Weiner in Congress is not having a good Monday, potentially shifting some of the momentum you’d think he’d still be riding from the Zadroga incident last week.
First up, Republican candidate Bob Turner’s campaign pounced on David Weprin’s misstatement of the federal debt to the Daily News editorial board, generating some coverage across the political blogs to the misstep.
Weprin’s campaign responded:
“Obviously David knows that the national debt is $14 trillion. David’s slip of the tongue is not going to harm Brooklyn and Queens working class families and seniors like Bob Turner’s plan to end Medicare and Social Security as we know it. Nor will it take away health care for our brave volunteer first responders, which is what Bob Turner wants to do.”
Secondly, and oddly, David Weprin’s campaign canceled tonight’s debate in the Middle Village, stating, “The hurricane caused major logistical and scheduling problems for the campaign and thus David is not able to make the debate this evening.”
The head of the Juniper Park Civic Association, which had been planning to hold the debate, felt blindsided by the cancellation and was livid. “I was really undecided as to who I’d vote for,” he said. “Not anymore.”
As a related side note, I’ve received, I believe, five different press releases from Turner’s campaign so far today — Mondays are a common day for both campaigns to jump out of the gate aggressively with press releases. I’ve received zero from Team Weprin. [Update: Since writing this post I’ve received a Weprin press release and another Turner one.]
